The Signs and Symptoms of a Failed ECM

The engine control module, or ECM for short, is the brain of the modern diesel internal combustion engine. It’s an onboard computer that monitors and regulates a multitude of performance and drivability functions, including the fuel supply and injection system, maintaining the amount of air that’s fed to the engine, and regulating emissions.   Since the ECM is responsible for handling virtually every performance parameter of your Caterpillar  diesel engine, when it starts to fail, the vehicle can experience all sorts of issues. It may even fail to start at all.  So, what are the signs and symptoms of a failing ECM? Well, let’s take a look. The Check Engine Light Appears on the Control Panel The appearance of the dreaded check engine light on your vehicle’s control panel is something you can’t afford to ignore. It’s essentially a warning from the ECM itself that there’s a problem. However, an illuminated check engine light doesn’t necessarily mean that there’s a problem w
