PCM Reflashing: Everything You Need To Know

PCM (Power Control Module) reflashing is a software upgrade. PCMs consist of microchips that you can reprogram electronically without removing them from the vehicle. This is done using a diagnostic connector.

The process is given many names, such as PCM flash, PCM reflash, PCM programming, or PCM reprogramming. ECM repair and reprogramming specialists often refer to it as an upgrade of your PCM’s microchip.

Reasons for Reflashing Your PCM

· Fixing Factory Bugs

Auto manufacturers are constantly updating controller software to create solutions for poor fuel economy, hard starting, emissions problems, and more. If you don't have a warranty or you're using a dealer for tune-ups, reflashing could be quite beneficial for your car.

· Improving Performance

Reflashing your PCM tends to improve the car’s fuel efficiency, add more torque or provide a quicker throttle response. A professional tuner customizes the flash according to the owner’s needs by doing the following:

- Improving the original factory PCM programming

- Changing the engine's idle speed, fuel mixture, spark timing, or other emission control functions

- Leveling or altering the shift characteristics of an automatic transmission

- Adjusting the ABS operation, stability control systems, or traction control

You may also consider reflashing once you’ve installed an aftermarket performance cam, larger cylinder heads, or a fuel induction system to compensate for the airflow changes. Car dealers highly recommend a professional tune when used in combination with other aftermarket parts.

The Process of PCM Reflashing

Though every vehicle manufacturer is different, the procedure of reflashing provides a broader insight into how it works practically.

· Use a compatible cable to connect your PC to the tool.

· Ensure that the battery is fully charged before starting the procedure.

· Run the software program on the PC and enter the vehicle’s information (make, model, year)

· Connect the tool to the diagnostic connector on the vehicle (located near the steering column under the dash).

· Switch on the tool and wait for the Start screen.

· Enter the VIN.

· Every software is a bit different, but generally, you’ll be encouraged to choose the engine fuel system, operating system, and speedometer and initiate transfer.

· While the software loads, you will see the progress bar. The programming completes within 30-40 minutes.

· The programming is complete when the software is finished loading. The data is transferred to the PCM’s memory chip.

· Turn off the ignition before disconnecting the tool.
